1899 is an upcoming horror-mystery series in development at Netflix. The series is written by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the creators of the popular horror-mystery series, Dark. Writing for the series began in August, 2020. The first season of the show is due to be released on November 17, 2022.
Synopsis[edit | edit source]
1899. A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.[1]

- Whilst also being written by the creators of Dark, the series is also set in the same year as the show, 1899.[3]
- The show is multilingual, meaning that the actors and actress will speak in their native tongue on the show.
- 1899 has an age rating of 16+[4].
- 1899 had a two-episode premiere on 47th Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022.
- Jantje Friese, one of the co-creators of 1899, has revealed that the show is intended to be a three season adventure, but whether or not the show realises this potential is down to the reception from the audience.[5]
